Most of the time, members of the European Parliament live in the shadow of national politicians at home. They have gained many new powers, especially in the European Union’s new Lisbon treaty. But the parliament remains an assembly of committees and not a forum for inspiring debate, and it accordingly struggles to attract public attention.
Yet once every five years MEPs catch the limelight with hearings of prospective members of the European Commission. The 26 nominees each face three hours of grilling. The parliament can only approve or reject the entire commission, but in 2004 the threat of a no vote was enough to make Italy withdraw Rocco Buttiglione, opposed by MEPs for his conservative views on homosexuality. The parliament will vote on the commission—to be presided over by Jos? Manuel Barroso in his second term—on January 26th. |

Предлагам ви моя опит по въпроса. Преди няколко години бях се сприятелил с големия философ Ричард Рорти, вече покойник. Обади ми се по едно време Рорти от Америка, че ми купил всички книги на философа Джон Дюи и ми ги праща. Решил човекът, че откъм Дюи имам известни дефицити... Получих съответното известие от Университета в Илинойс и се изнесох към пощата. Откъдето ме изстреляха към Митницата. И там се оказах, като Алиса едно време, в огледалния свят – където нищо не е онова, което е другаде. „Какво е това?” пита митничарят, сочейки към кашона. „Произведенията на Джон Дюи”, викам. „Картини?” пита, със светнал поглед, оня. |

FANS and foes of Bulgaria’s prime minister, Boyko Borisov, agree on one thing: this square-jawed ex-wrestler has enlivened the country’s politics. When Dessy Zidarova, a model and actress, was robbed outside her beauty parlour in Sofia recently, she refused to divulge her attackers’ identity to the police. The only man she could trust was the prime minister. So she demanded—and apparently gained—an immediate audience. Some plaudits verge on sycophancy. A new book of poems lauds Mr Borisov’s “dignified leadership”. The people of Kapatovo, a village near Sofia, named their hooch “Borisovka” after he vetoed higher alcohol duties. The burly Mr Borisov could hardly be more different from his predecessor, Sergei Stanishev. A bespectacled, Moscow-educated scion of a prominent Bulgarian family, Mr Stanishev is now being investigated over missing classified documents. |

The European Union's 27 new commissioners are currently being vetted by the European Parliament. But what was set to be a marathon of political waffling has taken an interesting turn as parliament flexes its muscles. Accused of lying, the candidate from Bulgaria has generated the most headlines. Germany's new man in Brussels, the governor of Baden-W?rttemberg, G?nther Oettinger, came across as a model eurocrat in his appearance before the European Parliament Thursday. He demonstrated that he can trot out suitably bland phrases just as competently as his future colleagues. Each topic, no matter how obscure, "will and should receive our attention," he said. |

Като се разнесе вестта, че властта пак емва едрата и дребната рогата престъпност, а и ще разследва богатствата на мутри, фолкпевици, ритнитопковци и други прякори, отначало хич не повярвах. Борбата с организираната престъпност краси всяка предизборна програма и се явява приоритет на всяко правителство. Нямах нищо против дори да ми бъдат отнети по-малки и по-големи части от демократичните и конституционни права и свободи, включително и да ме подслушват, да ми четат електронната поща и да изискват разпечатки от разговорите и регистрация на предплатената ми SIM-карта, стига да се стигне до положителен резултат в борбата срещу СИК, ВИК, МИГ и ТИМ. (То тия права и свободи много са ми притрябвали!) |
